Video: Suspended Dap

Hard rabid tailing carp can be infuriating. Often they can be surprisingly hard to catch since the carp can't find your fly in their own dustcloud and you can't figure out when they take the fly amid all the choas. If you can get close enough to dap the fly one presentation to try is suspending the fly just a couple of inches off the bottom at the edge of the dust cloud.

  1. Nice and well said. I use an egg and indicator, both to these fish and those in cloudy water bubbling away, fish unseen. This works for many of my fish, the majority in fact.

    2. Actually Mctage I attempt to have it at eye level or say 2" off the bottom. Sometimes absolute experience with the water lets me do this if visibility is poor. With bubbles same, and I know I am OK when the indicator slows on the bottom in a slight breeze only once in a while. I have one small stream and it works, otherwise it's pond water.

  3. I use this suspended dap a lot. I catch most of my fish on a fly either falling through the water column or suspended within it. I suspend via dap or dropped from a dry fly. Interesting comment about the carp pinning the fly to the bottom. I've only seen this a few times. There was was a pretty pronounced "bump" when this happened, which you note. Then again I've also seen carp take a nymph dropped from a dry fly without disturbing the dry at all, maybe just making it tremble slightly in the film. Crazy stuff.

  4. I am specifically talking about hard tailers there. Whenever I have had a slow cruiser take a suspended fly it was real subtle. Like they just swim through it.

  6. You're right. I kinda lost sight of that on that first response. Definitely thinking of cruisers when I wrote that bit about the dry being undisturbed on the take.
