There Can't Possibly be Two Ways To Thingamabobber?

I plan a longer post later about fishing rip-rap dams but first I have a quick question to anybody listening who does any indicator fishing to big fish.  Is there more than one way to rig a thingamabober?

The reason I ask is because I exerimented a little more with indicator fishing again today.  I hooked a nice hot fish but had to apply maximum pressure because of heavy current and the line broke at the thingamabobber!  What the heck??!!!  I work too hard for these fish, I can't afford an inferior rig.  Is there a right way and a wrong way to rig a thingamabobber so that it doesn't stress the line?

EDIT - Steelheaders from facebook are telling me never to use thingamabobbers for big fish.  Evidently that little grommet in there is metal and screws up your line on big fish.  Who knew?

  1. I don't use them even if they did work as they are so popular. I use a walleye float by Cormel of Buda Tx. I think we've discussed this email, maybe not. I'll gladly send particulars, model, pictures, to any one interested as I use indicators much.

  2. Gregg - Based on the advice I am getting on facebook the Stealheaders have already run into this problem and either forgo thingamabobbers altogether or coat the grommet with fingernail polish or something simmilar. I will probably try something different.

  3. thingamabobber looks too much like worm fishing to me, might as well use one of those red-and-white clipon bobbers.. actually that wouldn't cut the line so might even be an improvement.

I make my own - a skein of egg yarn in some dayglo colour, bind the middle with tying thread, fold to make a loop of the threaded piece, and bind that loop. Cut to length, soak the whole thing in floatant and keep in a ziplock until needed. This will float for half a day's fishing in most conditions.

    1. That has always struck me as work. Particularly since I plan on indicator fishing carp once in a great great moon, mostly just for well-roundedness. I will probably go back to Thill's like Miles mentions below from my past life steelheading.

  4. C'mon McT...You've indicator fished enough for steelhead to know...corky or a thill ice and fly with a toothpick or a rubberband...by the way I'm still on the schnide

    1. I thought you had em lined up knocking down the doors a couple of weeks ago. Cold snap or no time?

They didn't have thingamabobbers back then or we would have tried them, trust me. They are so moronically easy to use compared to a thill or split foam or anything. You can switch from indicator to more of a sight-fishing single fly setup in seconds without re-tying and never lose your toothpick and they seem to stay where you placed them perfectly. Too bad they come with negative side-effects, I thought they were sliced bread until now.

  5. There was a cold snap but mostly not enough time...I've been spending a lot of time at CPG this spring so I'm sure I'll check out some spots on the Huron before too long...
