Bread Flies and Vegas. Baby.

I am headed back to Vegas next week for our annual World Poker Tour Amateur Championships and could use some advice. I found some carp there last year but they were in park with lots and lots and lots of duck feeders.  As a result they were totally fixated on sunken bread and unfortunately I did not have a single fly that looked anything like bread.   I am talking 3 hours of almost continuous shots to hard tailing fish without a single one even looking at the nymph patterns I had with me.  Totally exasperating.

Now, I know that various pale shades of egg patterns will do the job - and I also plan on having some indicators on hand so that I can apply Gregg Martin's methods but does anybody have any other advice on flies and techniques for bread fixated carp?

  1. I have caught trout on the Green below Flaming Gorge on bread flies at the lunch holes. Tan marabou, and nothing else, tied in clumps along the hook shank. The trick is to smack it down on the water as hard as you can to simulate the weight of bread plopping into the water.

    2. I would use a deer hair fly #12 or #10 and tie it to your tippet. The key to this type of dry fly working is to make it appear to be floating off the bottom a few inches. A tungsten bead head nymph or a split shot an inch or two above the bread fly will be enough to get the deer hair bread fly down and floating off the bottom. I've used it before and carp will take it

    3. Thanks Bill. I tied up one size 10 deer hair pellet with a thin foam strip for crust and a 2.7mm brass bead on a 1.5" drop-shot. Should match what you are talking about spot on.

  2. Off white Mctage, size 6-10, a few just in case of spun wool and or bug yarn to size 2. Good luck!

    suggests,
" have had good luck with either a deer hair floating hunk of bread or one made of Sheep fleece and let it sink slowly like the waterlogged bread."
Sheep fleece can be bought on ebay, good grief..
