That Doesn't Hurt

A free pass from my lady to head out for a morning chasing carp with Barry Reynolds.  That doesn't hurt.

A ridiculously complicated battle requiring immediate concession of 50 feet of backing, passing the rod around several obstructions, untangling from the very top of a tree and throwing my rod over guide-wires like a javelin not once but twice.  With a carp struggling on the other end the entire time.  That doesn't hurt.

The guitar pose?  That holds hidden meaning.  I hope that doesn't hurt, it is not meant too.

The 14 stitches and a tetanus shot earned in the process?  That hurt quite a bit.

Having to leave early to head to the emergency room and therefore miss seeing Barry hooking into some real beasts?  Even another carp took the time to watch.  Damn, that is excruciating.

  1. Ouch. That looks kinda nasty. How many stitches did it take to close that up?

    Nice fish though!

    1. Yeah man. It's the next big thing. Kindof like those strongman competitions except instead of a barrel over a wall it's a 7 weight over a bridge guide-wire. Kindof like a casting competition except instead of hitting a 3 foot target with a size 12 you try like hell just not to break your rod while not getting bashed on the head or breaking your ankle while trying to catch it. With a fish attached of course.

  3. What happened to the leg? Did Barry not drive you to the E.R.? :)

    1. Hell no G. I was not dying, therefore it does not fit the criteria of your partner cutting their day short too. It almost didn't fit the criteria of me cutting my day short either but I was pretty concerned about infection. Took a fall and rusty post-industrial bridge metal cut through two layers of folded over wet soggy DSP bacteria infested wading socks on the way directly to my shin-bone. So I put on my ankle bracelet and split.

    1. Good. I am sure the guitar pose is barely relevent to his real legacy but it is the part I know to honor.

  7. Who says fishing is a peaceful and harmless occupation? First Aid kit as a fly carpin' essential?

    1. Right on target John. When I told her I took the time to take a picture and post it directly to facebook I swear you could HEAR her eyes rolling over the phone.

  9. McTage,

Love the attitude! A scar with meaning! Wish I had a fish scar. You know, sounds like urban fishing at it's best. Nice fish also. Those fish that follow hooked fellows, makes you wonder.

    1. It's funny Gregg. Usually they do that when spawning. They do have freak mini-spawns basically all year, maybe Barry was in the middle of one of those. I know John has netted a couple of "bonus" carp and I came close to pulling it off twice this year.

  11. "Dear Warranty Dept, In the midst of a routine javelina toss, it ...
    well, it just broke."

I applaud the effort, but please do not repeat the (old-jagged-bridge-metal-gash) stunt.

Still an example of Fly-Carper angling tenacity at the very highest level.
